Claude vs Copilot (2026): Claude Enterprise vs Microsoft 365 Copilot
Claude vs Copilot, compared by Coworker AI: Claude Team and Enterprise vs Microsoft 365 Copilot on pricing, connectors, admin controls and fit.
In the Claude vs Copilot decision, pick Microsoft 365 Copilot if your company runs on Microsoft 365 and you want AI built into the apps people already use, and pick Claude if you want the strongest general assistant across many tools, plus coding and long-running tasks, in one seat. Copilot starts from your Microsoft 365 data. Claude starts from the model and reaches your data through connectors.
This post compares Microsoft 365 Copilot, the work assistant, with Claude's Team and Enterprise plans. If you are choosing between GitHub Copilot and Claude Code for engineering, that is a different decision; the Claude Code pricing guide covers the coding side.
I read Anthropic's and Microsoft's own pricing pages, plan documentation and admin docs on October 19, 2026. Every price and product fact below links to its source, and I flag where the two vendors' claims about each other disagree.

What is the difference between Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot?
The difference is where each product starts. Microsoft 365 Copilot is an add-on license that puts AI inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, grounded in the Microsoft Graph: your mail, meetings, chats and files. Microsoft calls the context engine behind it Work IQ, "a workplace intelligence layer" that builds "a semantic understanding across Microsoft 365 and external systems" (Microsoft Learn).
Claude is Anthropic's assistant, sold to companies as Team and Enterprise plans. Anthropic describes Enterprise as one seat for every surface: chat, Claude Code, Claude Cowork for multi-step work, and Claude inside Microsoft 365, Chrome and Slack (Claude Enterprise). Its company context comes from connectors that an admin approves and each user signs in to.
The line between them is blurrier than the marketing suggests, in both directions:
- Claude runs inside Copilot. Anthropic is a Microsoft subprocessor, and Microsoft turns Anthropic models on by default for most commercial customers outside the EU, EFTA and UK in Microsoft Copilot, Researcher, Copilot Studio and Copilot in the Microsoft 365 apps (Microsoft Learn).
- Claude runs inside Office. Anthropic says Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word are generally available on all paid plans, with Claude for Outlook in beta (Claude for Microsoft 365).
So "Claude or Copilot" is often less a model choice than a choice of who owns the experience, the admin console and the bill.
Claude vs Copilot pricing: how much does each cost?
Claude Enterprise costs $20 per seat per month billed annually, plus usage at API rates, with an annual commitment and a 20-seat minimum (Anthropic). Microsoft 365 Copilot costs $30 per user per month paid yearly, and needs a separate qualifying Microsoft 365 license (Microsoft). All prices below are US list prices as of October 2026.
| Plan | Price | What it includes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Team, Standard seat | $25/month billed monthly, $20/month billed annually | Chat, Claude Code, Cowork, connectors, SSO; weekly usage limits; 2 to 150 seats | Claude Help Center |
| Claude Team, Premium seat | $125/month billed monthly, $100/month billed annually | Same as Standard with much more usage | Claude Help Center |
| Claude Enterprise | $20/seat/month billed annually, plus all usage at API rates | Everything in Team plus audit logs, SCIM, Compliance API, retention controls; minimum 20 seats | Anthropic |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot (add-on) | $30/user/month, paid yearly | Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps, Work IQ, prebuilt agents; base Microsoft 365 plan billed separately | Microsoft |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Business (add-on) | $21/user/month paid yearly (shown at $18 as a promotion) | For Business plans of up to 300 users | Microsoft |
| Copilot Chat | No additional cost with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription | Web-grounded chat; agents metered | Microsoft |
The two pricing models behave differently. Claude Enterprise splits access from consumption: the seat fee covers access only, and "all usage across Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork is billed separately at standard API rates" with no per-seat cap (Claude Help Center). Admins can set spend limits per organization and per user. Copilot is a flat seat on top of your Microsoft 365 license, with usage-based charges only for select advanced AI features and agents.
Here is what the seat fees alone look like at two common sizes:
| Company size | Claude Enterprise seats | Microsoft 365 Copilot seats |
|---|---|---|
| 100 users | $24,000/year, plus API usage | $36,000/year at $30, or $25,200/year on Copilot Business at $21, plus base Microsoft 365 plans |
| 500 users | $120,000/year, plus API usage | $180,000/year, plus base Microsoft 365 plans |
Neither row is a total cost. On Claude Enterprise, heavy Claude Code or Cowork users can cost far more than their seat in tokens. On Copilot, the seat sits on top of Microsoft 365 licenses you may already pay for. Full breakdowns: Claude API pricing and Microsoft Copilot enterprise pricing.

How do Claude connectors compare to Copilot connectors?
Copilot reads Microsoft 365 natively and adds other systems through connectors, most of which index content into the Microsoft Graph. Claude reaches company data, Microsoft 365 included, through connectors built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Copilot connectors. Microsoft offers "over 100 prebuilt connectors". A connector syncs content into Microsoft 365, each item carries an access control list, and "Search and Copilot only show items to users who have access in the source system" (Microsoft Learn). Slack is covered by partner-built connectors in Microsoft's gallery rather than a Microsoft-built one (partner gallery), which matters if most decisions at your company happen in Slack.
Claude connectors. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds a connector for the organization and each member then connects with their own account (Claude Help Center). Anthropic lists connectors for Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and Slack in the plan itself, and the Claude connector directory listed 974 connectors when I checked on October 19, 2026 (Claude connectors). The Microsoft 365 connector covers SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook and Teams (Claude). Anthropic says connectors "respect the permissions users already have in the underlying systems."
Claude also ships enterprise search: a preconfigured "Ask Your Org" project that searches across the apps an Owner connects, such as Slack and Microsoft 365 (Claude Help Center).
The practical difference: Copilot's strength is depth inside Microsoft 365, where it already holds an index of your mail, files and meetings. Claude's strength is breadth, because almost any SaaS tool or internal system with an MCP server can become a connector. For how MCP works in Claude, see Claude MCP explained.
Which is easier for IT to govern?
If you already run Microsoft 365, Copilot is easier to govern, because it inherits the identity, permissions, data loss prevention and retention policies you have already configured. Claude Enterprise is a separate admin console, but its control set is now broad.
| Control | Claude Enterprise | Microsoft 365 Copilot |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | SSO, domain capture, SCIM and JIT provisioning, role-based access | Microsoft Entra ID, existing Microsoft 365 permissions |
| Logging | Audit logs, Compliance API, Analytics API, OpenTelemetry | Microsoft 365 auditing and Purview |
| Data controls | Custom retention, customer-managed encryption keys, US-only inference, IP allowlisting | Existing Microsoft 365 residency, retention and governance policies |
| Training on your data | Not by default | No |
| Data protection terms | Anthropic's commercial terms; HIPAA-ready configuration with a BAA | Enterprise Data Protection and the Microsoft Data Protection Addendum |
Sources: Claude Enterprise, Claude Help Center, Microsoft.
Anthropic's trust center lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, ISO 42001 and HIPAA for Claude Enterprise (Anthropic Trust Center). Its Compliance API feeds Claude activity and conversation content into security tools, and Anthropic says more than 100 security and compliance vendors integrate with it (Anthropic).
One detail for global companies: when you use Anthropic models inside Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft says those models are currently excluded from the EU Data Boundary, and they are off by default for EU, EFTA and UK customers (Microsoft Learn).
Is Claude better than Copilot?
Claude is better than Copilot for open-ended reasoning, writing, analysis and coding across many tools. Copilot is better than Claude for work that lives inside Microsoft 365 documents, mail, calendars and meetings. Which matters more depends on where your people spend the day.
Where Claude is stronger
- One seat covers chat, coding and long tasks. Every Team and Enterprise seat includes Claude Code and Cowork, so engineers and business users sit on one contract (Claude Help Center).
- Breadth of connectors. A directory of 974 connectors plus custom MCP connectors reaches far past Microsoft 365, including Slack, GitHub and Google Workspace natively.
- The full Claude model lineup. Claude plans include Anthropic's newest models (Claude pricing). Inside Copilot, Microsoft decides which Anthropic models appear in which feature, and Microsoft says some newer Anthropic models need a separate admin opt-in.
- Usage scales with need. Enterprise has no per-seat usage cap, so a power user is not throttled mid-week. The tradeoff is a variable bill.
Where Copilot is stronger
- Native in the apps people already use. Copilot summarizes Teams meetings, schedules in Outlook and edits files in place in OneDrive and SharePoint, inside your tenant.
- No new admin surface. Permissions, Purview policies and retention you already set apply to Copilot.
- Predictable cost. A flat seat price, and Copilot Chat at no additional cost for eligible Microsoft 365 users, so many companies can pilot before buying.
- Model choice includes Claude. Microsoft offers OpenAI and Anthropic models in Copilot, so you can get Claude-powered answers without a second vendor relationship.
Microsoft publishes its own comparison page, which says Claude "did not work in Teams", "did not enforce Microsoft Purview policies" and "offers limited pre-built connectors" in Microsoft's tests (Microsoft). Those are simulated tests run by a competitor, captured between April and June 2026, and some of its descriptions, such as Claude Cowork being desktop-only, no longer match Anthropic's current documentation. Read it as one vendor's case, then test both on your own data.
Can you use Claude inside Microsoft 365?
Yes, three ways, and each changes who manages it:
- Claude models in Microsoft Copilot. Managed by Microsoft, under Microsoft's terms, enabled in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. Anthropic's add-ins, under Anthropic's terms, on any paid Claude plan.
- The Microsoft 365 connector in Claude. Claude reads SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook and Teams from inside the Claude app.
Many companies end up running both: Copilot for meeting recaps and inbox work inside Microsoft 365, and Claude for analysis, writing and Claude Code. If you are weighing ChatGPT too, see ChatGPT Enterprise vs Microsoft Copilot. If your company does not run Microsoft 365 at all, start with enterprise AI without Microsoft 365.
Claude or Copilot: which should you choose?
| If this describes your company | Start with |
|---|---|
| Nearly all work happens in Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive | Microsoft 365 Copilot |
| You want one seat for business users and engineers, including coding | Claude Enterprise |
| Slack, Google Workspace and GitHub matter as much as Microsoft 365 | Claude Team or Enterprise |
| Security wants every AI control in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft 365 Copilot, with Anthropic models enabled if wanted |
| Fewer than 150 people and you want a fixed monthly bill | Claude Team or Copilot Business |
| You need a BAA for AI chats | Claude Enterprise (HIPAA-ready configuration); confirm Copilot's coverage for your tenant with Microsoft |
Whichever way you lean, run both on 10 to 20 real questions your team asked last month. Score each answer on accuracy, whether it cited the source, and whether it respected who is allowed to see what.
What do Claude and Copilot both miss about your company?
Both tools answer from whatever their connectors can reach at the moment someone asks. Neither keeps a shared, continuously updated picture of how your people, customers, projects and deals relate across every tool.
- Copilot's context stops near the Microsoft 365 edge. Work IQ is deep on mail, files and meetings. For Salesforce, Jira or Slack, it depends on which connectors an admin set up, and partner connectors for Slack.
- Claude's context is assembled per question. Connectors fetch data live for the person asking. That keeps permissions simple, but a new chat usually starts by searching again, and the tokens spent re-reading the same documents show up on an Enterprise bill billed at API rates.
- Neither remembers across tools. Ask "how has the Acme renewal evolved over the last five calls?" and both have to rebuild the answer from raw sources every time.
That missing piece is a context layer: a permission-aware layer that keeps company knowledge structured and current so any model can use it. For a longer explanation, see what a context layer is and how a context graph differs from a knowledge graph.
How does Coworker add a context layer to Claude or Copilot?
Coworker is an enterprise AI platform built on OM2, its organizational memory. OM2 is a permission-aware knowledge graph built from 50+ connected tools, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, SharePoint and OneDrive alongside Slack, Salesforce, HubSpot, Jira, Gong and Google Drive. It maps the people, companies, projects and deals across those tools and keeps the graph current as new data arrives. Coworker's CEO puts it simply: "You can think of OM2 as a context graph."
What that changes for a Claude or Copilot rollout:
- Company context inside Claude. Coworker MCP brings OM2 into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and any MCP client, with each person's source permissions applied. It works as a memory MCP for the whole company rather than for one user, so your Claude Enterprise seats get the same context your other tools do. The full list of sources is on the connectors page.
- Fewer tokens on retrieval-heavy work. In Coworker's own benchmark, Claude using OM2 through Coworker MCP used 9x fewer tokens than Claude using its native connectors on retrieval and context-heavy tasks, with Coworker Learning on and no change of model (methodology on the benchmarks page; statistically significant benchmarks comparing Coworker MCP vs. Claude Native Tooling). On a plan that bills usage at API rates, that is a direct cost lever.
- Agents that act, with approval gates. Coworker agents run on triggers and schedules and update systems such as Salesforce and Jira, with a person confirming CRM and ticket writes.
- Model-agnostic. In enterprise AI stack terms, OM2 is the AI memory layer that sits under whichever models you choose, so the context travels with you if you add Copilot, keep Claude, or switch later.
For direct comparisons, see Coworker vs Claude and Coworker vs Microsoft Copilot. If you are rolling out Claude or Copilot and want your company's context to come with it, book a demo and I will show OM2 running on the tools your team already uses.
